What to write

What do you mean, black leather trench-coats are cliched?

“Write what you know.”

That’s they tell you when you start out. It sounds like good advice but how do you write what you know when you want to write speculative fiction because you’re basically writing about “What if?” and everything after the “if” is anybody’s guess.

Of course, there are lots of tropes to explore, well trod ground of what has gone before. Sometimes sci-fi writers even get it right!

It might be easier to ask – What not to write?

Some publishers even go so far as to tell you exactly what they don’t want.

Between what I know, overused story-lines, settings, plot devices and silly science, and what publishers don’t want – there isn’t a lot left!
